One of the things we were always told as parents was to enjoy the children as they will grow so fast. To be honest, until your first born finally flies the nest you don’t have much opportunity to really understand the advice you have been given!
Those growing up years were always so busy from babies needing you constantly (and sleepless nights) to toddlers and young children needing your help and constant attention and still not enough sleep!
Then its kids’ parties, clubs, afterschool activities, the teenage years (stressful! – yet more lack of sleep from worrying!) and then young adults and seeing them start their way in the world.
Then, as your child becomes an adult, you are finally able to get lots of sleep. But, if you're anything like me, you would much prefer to see your little darlings every waking hour, as annoying as they can be at times. Yet, now you're lucky if you get one message a week! 7 days in a week, 24 hours in a day - funny though if they need something who do they call!! Oh well we did something right, I guess!
There is so much going on and you try to help them throughout all of life's obstacles, challenges, and scenarious however you can whilst also working, trying to see family and friends and generally stay sane! (I didn’t mention the housework as it’s not my fave thing to do but for many of you that will take up a HUGE amount of time as well!)
I was lucky though that whilst my younger ones were growing up, I was doing my dream job of photography. As a photographer, I managed to get lots of images of our children growing up, as well as photographs of my clients children throughout the years. Sure, not all of our family photographs have been sorted into albums, but they will be, and we can enjoy those memories as well as showing the kids their early years.
Autumn Family Photography Over The Years
One of the best parts about being a photographer is working with families regularly over the years and capturing the changes for them. This little lady I met for the first-time last autumn and she is a complete character!
Here you can see just how this wonderful child has changed from her first Autumn shoot in 2019 to her most recent portrait photoshoot this Autumn.
Capturing these special moments means the family have cherished memories to look over for many years to come.
Shoots with her involve quite abit of "no photos today " from her – not me! Working with children often comes with those challenges, and thankfully I've been a photographer for long enough (and a Mum!) that I know how to navigate those conversations and help the little ones feel comfortable in front of the camera.
These photoshoot also involved a lot of running around and praying (on my part) that some of shots captured her gorgeous personality! Mum knows her little girl so well and realises there is no point stressing, asking her to smile or even bribery! While bribery normally works with most of the little people, and amazingly teenagers, it doesn't work for this particular young client. So, it’s much better to try a different tac.
Instead, Mum joins in with the games and distractions to lighten the mood and get her on board with the photoshoot – even when heavily pregnant.
Mum is very happy again with the results this year and has already asked for a shoot next Autumn. I, already, am looking so forward to seeing them again then, along with the new addition to the family. I also can't wait to photography this young lady again and see how she's changed and grown over the course of another year. That really is the beauty of re-booking family photoshoots year and year again. You get to capture those changes and remember fond times.
I wonder what adventures we will have next year...

Book an Annual Family Photoshoot
If you would like to start a tradition of an annual photoshoot to capture your babies growing up, then please do contact me here. When booking annual photoshoots for clients, I always make sure to take into consideration your favourite time of year and places you love to go. This makes sure that we can create photos that are truly unique and personalised to your family and the places, times, and moments that matter to you.
We will then put plans in place to start capturing your children’s years growing up, so that you can always hold those memories in your hand (as a photograph!), as well in your mind.
